Fundraising
You Don't Need New Donors. Here's Why
You don’t need new donors, you need to focus on the ones you already have.
This statement is going to seem wildly unpopular, I know.
We recently hosted a webinar with Alexandra Katzenstein, a seasoned development professional from the Boys & Girls Club of San Leandro. She and her team created a fundraising event in under 90 days and walked away with $212,000 in net revenue.
Her secret? She said, “I didn’t have time to focus on the money, only on the people“.
She didn’t obsess over the fundraising goal. She focused on relationships. She pulled reports, met with past donors, and spoke with community members and potential sponsors.
She listened more than she talked.
And in doing so, she activated the support they already had just waiting to be re-engaged.
The Donor Retention Crisis
Right now, the nonprofit sector is experiencing a donor retention crisis. Everyone is chasing new donors while current and past supporters quietly drift away.
The big unlock: Its more powerful and more profitable to RETAIN than to replace.
Here’s a Roadmap:
- Pull a list of donors from the last 3 years and sort by giving.
- Reach out personally. Not with an ask, but with a phone call that starts with THANK YOU.
- Listen closely and ask for feedback about what they care about. Ask them WHY they gave in the
first place.
You don’t need more names, more prospects, more cold calls and cold outreach. You don’t need a clever social media campaign.
You need deeper connections with the people you already have.
