All Fundraisers Are in the Hospitality Business
I’ve come to believe something pretty strongly — especially after years in fundraising and building HGA:
We are ALL in the hospitality business
Yes, even you, nonprofit leaders, development staff, major gifts officers, gala chairs, and anyone who’s ever asked for a donation.
Hospitality isn’t just for restaurants or hotels. It’s at the heart of how we should think about donor relationships.
My Working Definition of Hospitality
- Thoughtfulness personified.
- How did you make the other person feel?
Not how much you raised. Not how fancy the event was. Not how perfect your pitch sounded.
How did your donor feel after hearing from you?
Here’s the truth: if your donor hasn’t heard from you since they gave, that’s just bad business. Remember, the worst thing in customer service is silence.
“No news” is not good news
Silence does not build trust. It doesn’t inspire loyalty. And it certainly doesn’t move anyone to give again.
At HGA we have a saying, “the worst thing in customer service is silence”.
But here’s the good news: hospitality is simple.
- Scared to talk to a high-net-worth donor? Just pick up the phone and say: “Thank you. That gift meant a lot to us.”
- Worried about what to say in a follow-up? Send a handwritten note and a small gift that shows you appreciate them.
You never had to ask for money. You were simply being hospitable! And you probably deepened the relationship in the process.
Fundraisers, you’re in the hospitality business
The most successful fundraisers we know? They’re not always the loudest voices in the room. They’re the ones who lead with gratitude. Who remember birthdays. Who send the thank-you before the follow-up call. Who check in just to say, “You matter to us.”
It’s not transactional—it’s transformational.
So here’s your challenge for the week: Think like a host. Lead with thoughtfulness. Make someone feel better because you connected with them.
Because Generosity flourishes in the presence of Hospitality. And your donors? They’ll never forget how you made them feel!
